Planning for Progress

Pinellas County Schools hosted a series of community meetings across the district to share school-specific data and gather feedback on population and enrollment trends, facility planning and school utilization.

GED Process

How do I start the GED process?
All interested students must first meet with the coordinator.  Dring that meeting you will decide if you want to take day or night classes, which Clearview location you want to attend, fill out paperwork, pay the tuition fee, receive a school ID badge and take the STEPS test.  You can't fail this test so don't worry.  This test tells us where your strengths are, and in what areas we can help you improve.  Please allow at least 3 hours on your first visit to meet with the coordinator, register and complete the test.

After you have tested, you will meet your teacher and together you will create an individualized lesson plan based on how you did on the STEPS test.  You will work one subject area at a time completing work in the classroom and at home showing mastery in the four subject areas of the GED test which are Science, Social Studies, Math and Reading/Language Art.

Once your subject area lessons are complete, you will take pre-GED level practice tests, including the computer based official GED-Ready practice tests, to make sure you are ready for the official GED test.

What happens when I am ready for the official GED test?
When your teacher believes you are ready, they will explain how to register for the official GED test.  Registration and payment for the official GED test is done online.  The fee is $32.00 per subject area.  With all four subject areas, Science, Social Studies, Math and Reading/Language Arts, totaling $128.00.  You do not have to take all four subject areas at the same time.  In fact, we recommend you start with your strongest subject area and take one test at a time.  Since the GED test is now done on the computer, you will know within a few hours if you have passed.  Once you have passed one subject area, you can then move on to the next until you have passed all four subject areas.

The official GED test is only given on certain dates at specific locations in Pinellas County.  You must pre-register through the GED website at https://www.ged.com.  You must present a current, legal photo ID at the testing center in order to take the test.  Ask your teacher to make sure you have what is required.

What happens after you have passed all four subject areas?
Congratulations, you are now a graduate with a State of Florida High School Diploma.  You will have the option to receive a copy of either your diploma or your transcripts at no charge.  Additional copies of either one can be ordered through the GED website for a small additional fee.

As a graduate, you will be eligible to celebrate your achievement at the Pinellas Countywide Graduation Ceremony held each year in the Fall, where you will get to wear a cap and gown and proudly walk across the stage in front of family and friends and teachers.
